“Where Ships Climb the Mountain,” Thorold’s motto, comes from the fact that this heritage city sits 350 ft. above sea level at the top of the Niagara Escarpment!

The  first Welland Canal was built in 1824 and the fourth and present Canal was completed in 1932.

Countless tourists are in awe when they see the giant gates trap the water to maneuver huge ships up or down the Niagara Escarpment between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.  Although there are other Flight Locks in the world, Thorold’s twin locks are the only ones that lift ships higher or lower, over a shorter distance.

Many homes, churches and buildings in Thorold are designated historical sites.  It is a real treat to see the architecture up close and appreciate their beauty in person.

Be sure to check out  Thorold Tourism to see what else you can do while you are in the city and make a day of it!
